The Pool is a 2016 Indian Tamil-language psychological thriller film written and directed by debutant Samy, a college student in London. It was produced by Mukesh Bhatt and Mitesh Shah, under their banner Vishesh Films. The film stars newcomers Dhanush and Anjali Patil in the lead roles while Madhavan appears as the antagonist. Several directors including Gautam Menon, Arun Gopi, Aishwarya Rajesh, K S Ravikumar have been involved in its making with cinematography from Ravi Varman and music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. Samy, a Delhi University student working as a production assistant in London with his friend Amba, lives together with his mother Aruna, grandfather Anand and his grandmother Janki. In a conversation with the latter, Anand explains that he had been married to Sumathi when he was studying in college and she unfortunately died after giving birth to Dharani. The orphaned baby was raised by Janki and Aruna who made her feel included in the family. At the same time, Anand convinces Janki to let him marry a woman of their choice so they can have a family again which she agrees making Dharani extremely happy. A couple of years later, Anand undergoes surrogacy treatment for his second wife. Amba is the surrogate mother, who is already pregnant with Anjali's child. A few days before the baby girl girl is born, another woman coincidentally enters their house claiming to be the real mother of the baby. Janki, Dharani and Aruna then find out that Sumathi was actually their cousin Arundathi's biological daughter and was raised by her father after her own mother died giving birth to her. The same woman who claimed to be the real mother of the baby was actually Arundathi's friend, who had been sent by her father to make sure that she was adopted properly. Anjali Kiran played by Dhanush, a journalist from Karthik's popular Tamil magazine column accidentally meets Anjali, a witch living in London. She later discovers that Anjali is indeed a witch and Karthik hates her as he believes that she is a bad influence on his daughter Sakiya who has immense powers.
